Will Styles and Learned Hand established FunkTrust at the beginning of 2001 in order to rationalize their drinking habits and pay off their gambling debts. Since then, the weekly block party has succeeded in disappointing every financial expectation and fostered a generation of alcohol dependant absentee university students and young professionals. Promoting the consumption of beer and a mash up of block party breaks, party style hip hop, original uncut funk, occasional non-batty disco and exceptionally bad 80’s pop, FunkTrust has been rocking Thursday nights in Sydney for the last 3 years.
Both Will and Aaron are funk obsessives whose DJing is characterized by a flagrant disregard of genre and a passionate commitment to drinking. Anchored firmly in breakbeat, their sets generally incorporate (depending upon the party) old school funk, contemporary breaks, b-boy beats, hip-hop, non-batty disco, house, rock, pop, soul and very occasional credibility redeeming bouts of reggae. In addition to their FunkTrust parties, between them they are residents and regulars at Sydney spots Good Vibrations, Sounds on Sunday, Ear Candy, Champagne Breaks @The Grand Pacific Blue Room, the Basement with Sydney funk institution Professor Groove and the Booty Affair, as well as playing at large scale events around Australia, events which have included Field Day, Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass, Fuzzy Breaks, Parklife, Future Music Festival and numerous Gaelic Club parties.
Funktrust Residents since day 1 (joined at the start of 2002 by Mark Walton), Will and Aaron have exploited their position to score gigs supporting party rockers like Freddy Fresh, Dynamo Productions, Jungle Brothers, the Nextmen, Herbaliser, Arrested Development , DJ Pogo and DJ Food, and at events like Field Day, Renaissance, the Chinese Laundry, Cargo Bar, Sounds on Sunday, Good Vibratons Festival, Home ,Parklife, 360 @ the Hordern, Field Day, the Empire, Earthcore & numerous corporate & media launches…
