Abi Rose is fast gaining popularity in Perth, drawing fans at a rapid pace with the combination of funky bass slappin music, and lyrics that have an edgy, no holds barred approach.
Currently studying contemporary music at WAAPA, Abi Rose is just about to release her EP “Bittersweet”, at the Funk Club Leederville Hotel on the 30th April. Having recently performed her first original show at Perth’s prime new venue The Ellington Jazz club on the 20th Jan, the show “Soul Funk Town” was a sell out and left a crowd of fans peering in the windows outside hoping to get a glimpse of the act.
As the band began to play the first set, the audience looked around to see where the deep sultry voice of Abi Rose was coming from. Stepping out from behind the curtain she slowly made her way up onto the stage whilst wooing the crowd instantly with her first costume, a deep marone 60’s style shoulder less dress with cream lace gloves past her elbows and gorgeous patent white cream heels.
As the night progressed the music (and the outfit) turned a lot more into a rock funk feel and Rose kept the audience captivated with an outrageous stage presence and lyrical content fuelled with feministic and delightfully chivalrous notions. The music clearly represents influences from 70’s soul funk artists such as James Brown, Chaka Khan, Jimmy Hendrix and Abi Rose’s main idol…Betty Davis who was briefly married to the late Miles Davis.
Abi Rose plays drums, bass, and can kick it on the keys when the opportunity arises. This up and coming young artist writes about pretty much anything and everything but the common thread throughout all the songs is emotional intensity. You certainly won’t be bored. Whether it’s the funky slap bass, the syncopated rhythms or the satirical vocals…you will be undoubtedly left wanting more.
Most likely to meet you in a pair of jeans, skater t shirt, slightly dishevelled hair and a cheeky grin, Abi Roses on stage and offstage appearance varies to quite a great degree. In person she is really quite shy and has a definite cute air, whilst on stage she is hard to take your eyes off, exuding a confidence and “eat you alive” type feel that any show goer would be gripped on.
Gearing up for an Australian wide tour Sep this year, Abi Rose performs her original music at the funk Club Leederville hotel on the 30th April with an incredible line up of musicians including; Johannes Luebbers, Jamie Searle, Alistair Mc Avoy, Leonard Barker. Tickets are $15 at the door and the show starts at 9pm with the Funk Club House Band and DJ Charlie Bucket as support.
