Roc Raider
Roc Raida began his DJ career in the early eighties at the age of ten. Surrounded by such inspirations as his father, a member of the Sugar Hill Records act Mean Machine and hip hop impresario Grandmaster Flash, Raida cultivated his interest into an absolute passion. Now, Roc Raida is considered among the best of the contemporary DJ’s and has brought the art of Turntablism and Party rocking to a fresh new level.
In the late eighties Raida gained prominence as a member of the New York-based crew the X-Men who, for obvious of copyright reasons, later became known as the X-Ecutioners. Champions of furthering the turntablist movement, the X-Ecutioners made their reputation by utilizing the techniques of beat-juggling; the manual alteration between individual kick and snare sounds to create original drum patterns in real time. This practice has been an inspiration and a force in Roc Raida’s style.
In the beginning defeat was commonplace, as battles were mainly popularity contests. The more contests he entered the more the competition began to appreciate his style and determination. Pushing his limits and raising the standard with which DMC’s are judged, Raida began to get noticed. His impressive finishes in some of the premier DJ battles; first place in the 1991 "As One"; second place in the "Superman Battle"; and second place in the 1992 DMC US Finals were just the beginning. In 1995 Raida, was crowned the DMC World Champion in front of a massive London audience.
The past several years have seen Raida traveling around the globe in such exotic locations as Singapore, Turkey, Japan and Australia to China, Hawaii, Moscow, and the South of France. Two years ago on a panel at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Raida was appointed "Grandmaster", by some of Hip-Hop’s founding fathers. Rules for this dubious honor state that one may only be bestowed with the approval of another Grandmaster; Raida was not only approved, but also welcomed by Kool Herc, Grand Wizard Theodore and scratch evolutionist DST. To round out a phenomenal decade, Raida was also inducted into the DMC Hall of Fame at the 1999 DMC World Finals in New York City.
Roc Raida has been featured on an episode of "Saturday Night Live"; the first DJ to ever share the stage with the fabled SNL band. Proving, once again, that Raida is the perfect example of a master perfecting his art.
Raida has taken his DJ style to souring heights and has also moved into production in the last 8 years. He has produced record for artists, such as, Big L, Smif ‘N’ Wessun, Fat Joe, Bad Boy recording artist Aasim, Ghostface, Black Thought of The Roots and Linkin Park to name a few. He has also lent his hand’s scratching on records for artist’s like O.C.’s classic “Time’s Up” to pop sensation Pink’s new album “I’m Not Dead.” Recently Raida was the star of the National Pepsi commercial entitled Speakerboxx. From Raida’s experience’s and touring attributes he has released 3 DVD’s documenting The Adventures of Roc Raida and now created The Gong Battle (New York & London), which has brought a new light on the turntabilism world of battles.
With many more projects to come in the near future and now a part of the Heavy Hitters crew you will be hearing and seeing a lot of Raida for many years to come through his music, his visuals, his style and the radio where he is the newest edition to Washington D.C.’s 1 radio station WPGC 95.5. Stay tuned because The Adventures of Roc Raida are always going and going and going…
DJ Regal
From first DJ'ing in ‘86 Regal began playing in clubs in 1990. He started producing hip-hop with partner DJ Touché in 1989 and began 'The Wiseguys' in ‘94, with their first release - "The Real Vibes" - for Blackmarket records. Signed to Wall of Sound later that year they released 3 more singles and acclaimed debut LP "Executive Suite" in ‘96.
In '97 formed 'Bronx Dogs' with London DJ partner, Richard Sen. Between ‘96 & '98, they ran two monthly nights in London, "The Fun Gallery" and "Disgracelands", mixing up Hip-Hop, Funk, Disco, House and Drum'n'Bass to a riotous crowd. During this time they began their collaborations in the studio releasing The classic B-Boy anthem, "Tribute To Jazzy Jay" in '97 and released two more club lassics; "212 (The Weya Funk)" / "Mixed Blood (Mambo roc')" . There were also two albums, "Three Legged Funk" in ‘00 and "Enviro" in ‘01. In ‘98 DJ Regal launched his record label, 'Marble Bar', putting out 15 12" singles and 7 albums in 3 years. Marble Bar also became the first UK label to release Australian dance music putting out the UK 12" debut of the mighty Resin Dogs and a compilation of Aussie Hip-hop & Breaks, "The Burning Issue".
From ‘99 to ‘01, Bronx Dogs ran a monthly night at cult venue, The Dogstar and regularly guested at the famous 'Heavenly Social' club in the heart of London. At this time Bronx Dogs also remixed the likes of The Jungle Brothers, Sugarhill Gang, St. Etienne, Primal Scream, Sizzla, and Wamdue Project to name but a few... creating their deep and funky club sounds from the artists' original tapes.
In ‘02, after touring with the 'Vibes On A Summers Day' and settling in Oz, Regal remixed the ARIA award-winning single "Karma" by Melbourne's 1200 Techniques . He also collaborated with Melbourne's legendary DJ Ransom on a B-Boy track - "Do the Do (2002)". Later that year Bronx Dogs also returned with their final single, a cover of "Can't be Funky" by New York's Bush Tetras - Wire Magazine credited this as one of their top ten 'covers' of 2002).
Regal has also been spinning alongside Aussie DJ partner Liz Ether, as 'Play For Real Productions' since Jan ‘02 playing a more eclectic range of House, Disco, Boogie, Nu-Jazz and Funky Broken beats, culminating in a slot at 'Splendor in the Grass' ‘03. Other festival highlights have included Cockatoo Island, The Sydney Festival and Good Vibrations. Over the years, Regal has provided support to DJ Spinna, Herbaliser, Mark Rae, Dynamo Productions, Afrika Bambaataa, Blackalicious, Ugly Duckling, Kool Herc, DJ Zeph, Mista Sinista, Keb Darge, The Bamboos & DJ Krush , Lyrics Born, Roots Manuva, Domu, Boca 45, Katalsyt, The Nextmen and Sharon Jones .
Regular Sydney gigs include FunkTrust, The Loft, Dust Tones and a long-term residency at Sydney's massive "Boogie Down" night (Candy's Apartment). It was here that Regal proved his ability to rock the house to the absolute max with dynamite sets encompassing Hip-Hop n Funk, Nu-Soul, B-Boy Breaks and Disco thus winning 3D Magazine's Hip-hop DJ of the year award for ‘04.
In '05 Regal had his first solo track released, “Rock the Funky Beat” on the Aussie compilation, “Evolutionary Vibes Vol. 6”. This followed his popular remix of Aussie band The Camels, “Summertime” with steady play across Australia via Tripe J Radio . '06 finished off nicely with Regal bagging Runner-Up Local DJ of the Year in the 3D Magazine poll and a nomination in the Dance Music Awards . Recent production has included a remix of All Good Funk Alliance and completing his debut solo album. He is set to release his second solo album – for March/April '07 release.
